The inspiration for Songbird rose from connections with the families of those living with developmental disorders and intellectual difficulties. So, it’s no wonder we go beyond the provision of support services for people with disabilities, taking the time to understand, appreciate and work closely with the loved ones who surround them.
After retiring in 2014 from a career in Construction Management & Business Improvement to raise Angus cattle on my farm, I soon found myself missing the challenges that working life provided. At a stage in my life where giving back to the community had become paramount, I began searching for a new project that would fulfill both aspirations.
During the course of the following year, I met several elderly couples who were concerned about the future care of their adult children with disabilities. Who would be there for their children when they passed on? How could they ensure the future provision of care and support when they weren’t around? I discovered many families sharing a similar predicament – I had identified the people I could support!
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) was imminent, and I learnt that a pilot scheme was being implemented across the Hunter. In consultation with my sister-in-law who operated a disability respite service, we established an organisation to provide Supported Independent Living (SIL) to the children of the parents I had met… and so, Songbird was born!
In April 2015, we opened our first three homes, supporting nine NDIS participants. We quickly established ourselves as an industry leader, recognised as the 2016 Disability Service of the Year.
Today, Songbird is instrumental in providing safe and secure accommodation to dozens of individuals across many group homes. In addition, we deliver an expanding number of services to assist people with disabilities to become an integral part of their communities.
With the unwavering dedication of our staff, partners and supporters, Songbird will continue providing support to empower the people we serve to go beyond limitations.
