Mental Health Matters: For Participants, Support Workers and Everyone in Between
At Songbird, we believe mental health should never take a back seat. It shapes how we think, feel, connect with others and handle the ups and downs of daily life. If you’re an NDIS participant building new skills or a support worker helping others achieve their goals, your mental wellbeing is just as important as your physical health.
So let’s talk about it.
Why Mental Health Is So Important
Mental health is more than the absence of illness. It’s feeling good about yourself, being able to handle stress, build positive relationships and find purpose in the things you do. When our mental health is supported, everything from relationships to work to everyday tasks becomes more manageable.
For NDIS participants, this might mean feeling confident enough to join a community group, try something new or simply enjoy daily routines without feeling overwhelmed. For support workers, good mental health means showing up with energy, empathy and the emotional capacity to be there for others and for yourself.
What Can Impact Mental Health?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. But we do know a few things that can play a role:
- Past experiences like trauma or abuse
- Isolation or disconnection from the community
- Health challenges that impact confidence or independence
- The daily stress of managing routines, appointments or complex needs
- The environment. A calm, supportive space can make all the difference
These are things many participants and support workers experience. And while some factors are out of our hands, we can still build strong foundations to support mental wellbeing.
Spotting the Signs
Mental health challenges can look different for everyone. But here are some common signs it might be time to check in:
- Feeling tired or low on energy
- Withdrawing from others
- Sudden changes in eating or sleeping habits
- Mood swings or feeling easily overwhelmed
- Trouble focusing or staying motivated
- Turning to substances more often
- Feeling hopeless or on edge
It’s okay to not feel okay. But it’s even more important to talk about it.
The Benefits of Good Mental Health
When mental health is supported, it brings out the best in people. Some of the positive changes we’ve seen at Songbird include:
- Improved independence – confidence to take on daily tasks
- Stronger relationships – being able to connect, listen and support
- Better coping tools – handling challenges with more calm and clarity
- Greater participation – feeling ready to be part of the community
- A stronger sense of purpose – finding joy in new routines and goals
We’ve seen these shifts first-hand in both our participants and our team and they’re the reason we keep showing up every day.
How We Support Mental Health at Songbird
From creative day programs to meaningful community participation, everything we do at Songbird is built with wellbeing in mind. We know that mental health isn’t a separate piece. It’s part of the full picture. That’s why we support participants to:
- Build daily routines that feel achievable
- Develop meaningful connections with others
- Set goals that build confidence over time
- Access supports that work alongside their mental health needs
We also recognise that our support workers are people too. We value their emotional wellbeing and encourage time for self-care, open conversations and support when things get tough.
How the NDIS Can Help
The NDIS recognises the importance of mental health too. For those with psychosocial disability, the scheme can fund supports to improve social and community participation, increase independence and build capacity to manage daily life.
If you’re not eligible for the NDIS, there are still other supports available through Primary Health Networks and community mental health services. The key is knowing where to look and who to ask. That’s something we can help with.
Let’s Keep the Conversation Going
Mental health is not just a moment or a campaign. It’s something we commit to every day in the way we listen, support and show up for each other. If you’re a participant, support worker or family member and want to learn more about how we create safe, supportive spaces to grow and thrive, we’d love to chat.
