Big Changes to the NDIS in 2024: What Participants, Families and Support Workers Need to Know

Clearer Rules on What the NDIS Will Fund 

You can now only use your NDIS funding for supports listed as official NDIS supports. If it’s not listed, it usually can’t be funded. In special cases, participants can request to swap a support if it meets certain conditions. 

Structured Budgets and Funding Timeframes 

New NDIS plans now include a total budget amount, specific funding categories and set funding periods. In most cases, these funding periods will be split into three-month blocks. This is to help participants better manage their budgets across the life of the plan. 

Faster and Easier NDIS Plan Variations 

Small updates or one-off funding needs can now be made without starting an entirely new plan. This makes the process faster and simpler when support needs change. 

New Rules for Plan Management Oversight 

If someone self-manages their plan or uses a plan manager, the NDIA can now step in and change how the plan is managed if there are concerns about how funds are being used. This includes checking for things like past fraud or unsafe spending. 

Greater Transparency Around NDIS Eligibility 

People applying for the NDIS will now be told more clearly how they were assessed and which part of the NDIS access criteria they meet. This includes information about whether access is based on disability, early intervention, or both. 

Introduction of the NDIS Impairment Notice 

This new document clearly outlines the impairments that were considered during the access process. It will help guide what types of supports participants can receive under their plan. 

What These NDIS Changes Mean for You 

If you’re already in the NDIS, you won’t see everything change all at once. These changes will gradually affect you when your plan is reviewed or replaced. Over time, every participant will transition to the new framework. 

Some things you might notice include: 

• Clearer limits on what your funding can be spent on 

• More detail about how your plan is structured 

• The need to stick closely to the approved support list 

• Less flexibility in some areas unless an exception is made

Imagine Jason, who uses NDIS funding for therapy and daily living support. When his new plan arrives, it outlines a three-month funding period with a total amount for each support area. If Jason wants to purchase an item or access a service that’s not on the approved list, he may need to request a replacement or find a support that fits the rules more clearly.
