Life is better when you’re connected to your community, to the people around you, and to the things that bring you joy. For people living with disability, having the right support in place can make all the difference between simply getting through the day and truly living it. Community access and in-home support are about so much more than ticking boxes or completing tasks. They are about independence, belonging, and the freedom to live life on your own terms. And for many NDIS participants, these supports are already available to them, they just need to know where to start.
At Songbird, we provide both community access and in-home support across the Hunter region, and we see firsthand how the right support, at the right time, can transform someone’s life.
What Is Community Access Support?
Community access support is exactly what it sounds like – funded support that helps NDIS participants get out into their community, engage in social and recreational activities, and build connections with the people and places around them. It might look like going shopping, attending a class, visiting a friend, exploring a hobby, or simply getting out for a walk with someone by your side.
Under the NDIS, community access is funded under Core Supports and Capacity Building, recognising that social participation is not a luxury, it is fundamental to a person’s wellbeing and independence.
Why Community Access Matters: What the Evidence Says
The NDIS itself has conducted extensive research into social and community participation, including an umbrella evidence review of 57 systematic reviews covering more than 500 studies. The findings are clear.
Activities that led to improved participation outcomes including making friends, spending time in the community and feeling a sense of belonging — included art-based activities such as music, drama and art, as well as sports, physical activity and outdoor nature-based activities. Research indicates that social inclusion correlates with lower rates of depression and better quality of life outcomes for people with disability. Participants who are actively engaged in community activities often report feeling less isolated, with shared experiences helping to lift mood, reduce stress and combat loneliness.
At Songbird, our community access support is built around what matters to each individual participant — their interests, their goals, and their pace. Whether it’s a shopping trip, a day out in the community, or something more adventurous, we are here to make it happen.
What Is In-Home Support?
In-home support helps participants with the everyday tasks that disability can make difficult, including personal care, meal preparation, household tasks, developing routines, and building skills for greater independence. It’s support delivered in the most familiar and comfortable environment possible: your own home.
In-home support is not about doing everything for someone, it’s about doing things with them, in a way that builds confidence and capability over time. The right support at home can change all of that extra effort needed to manage simple things. Daily living assistance through the NDIS is built around the idea that your disability should not determine how much independence you have or how well you are cared for in your own home.
How Songbird Delivers Both
At Songbird, our community access and in-home support services are personalised to each participant. We work with you and your support network to understand what you want to achieve and build a support plan that fits your life, not the other way around.
Our support workers are matched based on skills, interests and compatibility, because we know that the relationship between a participant and their support worker makes all the difference. Research from the NDIS confirms that support workers matched in age, skills and interests, and who have the skills to get the best outcomes for participants, are key to improving participation outcomes.
Whether you need a few hours of support each week or more intensive daily assistance, we are here to help you live life on your own terms, in your home and in your community.
Is This Funded Through the NDIS?
Yes. Community access and in-home support are both funded under NDIS Core Supports. If these supports are not currently in your plan, speak with your support coordinator or Local Area Coordinator about having them included at your next plan review. The NDIS also has a helpful guide on social and community participation supports available here: ndis.gov.au
